Perched above the fabled peninsula of Sestri Levante, the Grand Hotel dei Castelli is a beacon of splendor that can be seen gleaming from miles away. Encompassing the edge of Sestri Levante’s promontory and situated amidst a sprawling natural park of lush vegetation, the hotel is a secluded paradise where nature and sea come together exquisitely and impeccable panoramic views of the Mediterranean can be seen from every angle. Opulently furnished rooms with sea and garden views, a gourmet restaurant featuring coastal Ligurian fare, and a private elevator that takes guests from the hotel down to the center of town, are but a few of the hotel’s celebrated features. Perhaps best encompassing the hotel’s central themes of nature and sea, guests can enjoy sunbathing and swimming in a natural pool of sea water carved out of an existing cove. Known as “the pool of castles”, it is a complete bathing experience with beach huts, showers, a pool side bar and an elevator that transports guest to and from the hotel above.
Although the original spot where ancient castles once stood, in 1920 the peninsula where the hotel currently resides was purchased by Riccardo Gualino. Using the ruins of the existing castles as his inspiration, he began the remediation of the peninsula with three new castles emerging from the endeavor: Castello Cipresi, Castello Lecci and Castello Agavi. In 1950 the entire complex was cultivated into the luxurious accommodation that it is today, but always with an eye toward the charm of its noble legacy. As coastal breezes waft their way over the lavish grounds of the hotel and through its inspiring structures, guests are lulled by the dream of ancient tales and the spirit of relaxation.
