Sample Itinerary

Day 1

After arriving to Porto Airport, be chauffeured to the UNESCO World Heritage vineyards of the majestic Douro Valley for check-in at your sumptuous, five-star wine country retreat. This evening, you’ll savor a tasting menu of contemporary Portuguese cuisine with wine pairing, accented by exquisite riverfront views, at one of the region’s most celebrated gastronomic restaurants.

Day 2

Privately cruise along the Douro River aboard an authentic wooden Rabelo Boat, as your knowledgeable captain describes the Rabelo’s significance in the historic production of Port. Be introduced to the stellar reds of the region as you sip Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz at one of the Duoro’s most esteemed producers, before indulging in the flavors of the season with a gourmet lunch accompanied by stunning views of the valley’s dramatic vineyard terraces.

Day 3

Today travel to the quaint village of Provesende to discover its fine tradition of artisan wares and rustic handicrafts. Visit the 18th century estate of a fabled Douro producer for a tasting of their coveted DOC vintages and an artfully prepared lunch of traditional Portuguese cuisine. This afternoon relish a lesser known viticultural treasure of the Douro with an exclusive tasting of legendary Lamego espumante (sparkling wine) at a historic cellar. Experience the Portuguese Baroque architecture of historic Lamego, including the impressive Santuario de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, with the insights of your expert guide.

Day 4

From your serene Douro River retreat set off for the medieval town of Guimaraes to explore its magnificent UNESCO designated center with your local guide. Journey back to the middle ages as you encounter the 10th century Castelo de Guimarães and such sublime civic squares as the Largo da Oliveira and Largo de São Tiago with their historic wooden houses and balconies typical of Northern Portugal. Dine on modern interpretations of regional specialties at a chic gastronomic restaurant before traveling to the ancient Roman city of Braga for an insider’s look at the Baroque masterpiece, the Santuário do Bom Jesus do Monte, known for its unique zig-zag staircase, adorned with intricate sculptures and fountains. Day 5

Visit the Morro da Sé neighborhood with its Romanesque Sé do Porto (Porto Cathedral), before touring the Neoclassical wonder that is the city’s former stock exchange, the Palacio da Bolsa. Traverse the sinewy medieval streets of the Ribeira district, leading to colorful Praça da Ribeira, accented by historic jewel-tone houses against a backdrop of Porto’s iconic riverfront. Day 6

This morning whisk away to the iconic Vinho Verde DOC producing region of Minho. Tickle your tastebuds with the crisp and slightly effervescent vintages of a family-owned wine estate. Sample the centuries-old tradition of smoked meats at a rustic Melgac?o smokehouse before touring one of Portugal’s oldest villages, a former Roman settlement known for its bucolic riverfront, emerald green countryside, and regal residences. Dine on country-inspired fare before crowning your day in the Minho province with a leisurely tasting at the lovely estate of a boutique Vinho Verde producer.

Day 7

Be lulled by the coastal breezes of the Atlantic as your chauffeur transports you to the colorful lagoon of Aveiro, sometimes referred to as the “Venice of Portugal.” With the help of your local guide, discover quaint bridges crisscrossing serene canals as you admire typical Moliceiro boats, decorated in technicolor splendor, gliding past. Experience the town’s kaleidoscope of architecture from fishermans’ cottages painted in vivid primary colors and whimsical Art Deco facades with sherbet-hued accents, to grand 15th century monuments.
